Nice photos. I am a Yosemite Indian, sorry not a Miwok, they were the scouts and guides for the military who went after the original Yosemite Indian people. I am a Paiute. Chief Tenaya was from Mono Lake and founded the Paiute colony of Ahwahnee. The Miwoks were actually afraid to enter Yosemite Valley, in their language Yosemite meant “The Killers” or “The Grizzlies” because they were afraid of the Yosemite Indians, but you wouldn’t know that by visiting the Yosemite Indian Museum. Many Paiutes believe that Yosemite is a Spanish loan word, because many of the Miwoks were neophytes from the Spanish Missions. “Oso” Bear – “matte” Kill = Yosemite. The Miwoks sided with the U.S. military and aided them to scout and capture Chief Tenaya and chase down his band, many of them escaped to Paiute Mono Lake crossing the Sierra Nevada in the snow.
